The American Institute of Architects (AIA) released its Top Ten Projects of 2014. In alphabetical order, they are:

- Bushwick Inlet Park
- Edith Green Wendell Wyatt Federal Building (EGWW)
- Gateway Center – SUNY-ESF
- John and Frances Angelos Law Center
- Sustainability Treehouse
- The David and Lucile Packard Foundation Headquarters
- Warroad U.S. Land Port of Entry
- Wayne N. Aspinall Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse
The Arizona State University Student Health Services is an adaptive reuse project. It consists of the demolition and new construction of part and the remodel of the remaining health facilities building. Its new systems include an interactive web tool. Plus it received LEED-Platinum and its energy performance is 49% below ASHRAE’s standards estimated and exceeding the 2030 challenge. The submitting architect is Lake/Flato Architects and is estimated to cost $7,600,000.
The Bud Clark Commons is a building that is combining permanent supportive housing and temporary shelters with a community resource center. It is part of Portland’s Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. The submitting architect is Holst Architecture for owners Home Forward. The land being used is a brownfield and the project is estimated to cost $28,750,000.
The Bushwick Inlet Park is on the Brooklyn waterfront and is a project to turn an industrial brownfield to a public park. It is designed to be 100% accessible with a building and grassy hill combined into one setting. The construction is new on an unused and previously unusable stretch of land. The submitting architects are Kiss + Cathcart, Architects and is estimated to cost $30,000,000.
The Edith Green Wendell Wyatt Federal Building is the renovation and remodel of an existing 18-story building in Portland to update all the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Plus it is updated to meet new blast resistance codes. The project is to be completed in 39 months and is on track to become one of the highest performance federal buildings on record at the General Services Administration (GSA). The submitting architect is SERA Architects, Inc. and is estimated to cost $141,500,000.
The Gateway Center – SUNY-ESF was a barren parking lot now being turned into a 3-story campus building including conference facilities, café, bookstore and offices. It is the State University of New York’s new College of Environmental Science and Forestry hub. It is being built to ‘foster teaching and research.’ It was submitted by Architerra and will cost approximately $26,500,000.
The John and Frances Angelos Law Center is the new law building at the University of Baltimore. It was previously a parking lot and is being redeveloped into a new building by Behnisch Architekten costing approximately $114,300,000 to be built.
The Sustainability Treehouse is an interactive, interpretive and gathering facility for ecosystems and environmental education. The owners are the Boy Scouts of America/ Trinity Works and it is submitted in the new construction category being built on a brownfield. It is estimated to cost $7,700,000.
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation Headquarters is the new headquarter building built to combine all the existing buildings that the foundation currently holds. It is in Los Altos, CA and is the largest building to date to receive the Net Zero Energy Building Certification. The submitting architect is EHDD and the project type is an office of new construction that is to cost $37,200,000.
The Warroad U.S. Land Port of Entry is on the Minnesota-Canadian boarder. It is a 19-acre site, surrounded and located in a wetland and owned by the U.S. GSA. The submitting architect is Snow Kreilich Architects, Inc. and is categorized as new construction in a rural area costing $30,000,000.
The Wayne N. Aspinall Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse is located in Grand Junction, CO, The building is a 1918 landmark renovation owned by the GSA, Rocky Mountain Region. It is categorized as a project of adaptive reuse of a historic structure or district and will cost $15,000,000.
The AIA also added one more to the list and called it the Top Ten Plus Winner. That building is the Iowa Utilities Board/ Office of the Consumer Advocate Office Building.
The Iowa Utilities Board/ Office of the Consumer Advocate Office Building is an infill development project on a former landfill. It is part of the State of Iowa Capitol Complex and the submitting architect team is BNIM. The project is classified as new construction on previously developed land and is estimated to cost $10,000,000.
These top ten plus one list of great accomplishments from the architectural and sustainable world of 2014 are encouraging attributions to the design world and a look to where our built society is heading. Congratulations to the winners and to all the entries for making the attempt to be the best sustainable projects possible.
